Thinkproject + Via Salis: The road to full-lifecycle infrastructure management

About the customer

Via Salis is the concessionaire for the D4 Highway, the Czech Republic’s first public-private partnership (PPP) highway project. Backed by VINCI Concessions, VINCI Highways and Meridiam, the company is responsible for the full lifecycle of the infrastructure, from design and construction to long-term operation and maintenance.

The project includes 32 kilometres of new highway and the modernisation of 16 kilometres of existing road. The project has incorporated initiatives supporting decarbonisation, circular economy principles, biodiversity and community engagement throughout its lifecycle.

The challenges

The D4 Highway is a large-scale infrastructure project. Due to its scale and complexity, the project presented several challenges:

Complex project data and processes: With multiple stakeholders and disciplines involved (engineering, construction, quality control, and operations), Via Salis needed a way to centralise information and ensure consistency across the entire project lifecycle.

Ensuring transparency and traceability: As a PPP project with long-term operational responsibilities, maintaining full visibility over decisions, changes, and documentation was critical for compliance, auditability and risk management.

Sustainability and ESG reporting: With sustainability considerations embedded throughout the project lifecycle, Via Salis required reliable tools to manage and track sustainability-related information, including carbon emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3), waste management, and biodiversity initiatives.

Adapting to the asset lifecycle: Over a multi-year lifecycle, project needs evolved significantly (from construction through to operations), requiring a flexible digital environment that could scale and adapt accordingly.

The solution

To address these challenges, Via Salis has implemented Thinkproject’s CDE solution, which is part of the Thinkproject Platform. This was used to create a unified digital ecosystem across the project and its entire lifecycle, bringing together all key project functions into a single system, including:

  • Electronic site diary
  • Geodesy and engineering workflows
  • Quality control and OSH processes
  • BIM model management
  • Specialised operational modules

In total, 14 modules were deployed, forming a comprehensive and connected environment for project delivery and management. Each module was configured to meet the specific requirements of the project, enabling:

  • Tailored workflows aligned to project processes
  • Continuous optimisation as the project progressed
  • Adaptation to different lifecycle phases

Moreover, the implementation of an Asset List module enabled detailed tracking of infrastructure assets, including maintenance history and operational interventions.

The platform also supported the management and tracking of sustainability-related information, including:

  • Carbon footprint tracking across Scopes 1, 2 and 3
  • Monitoring of waste generation, recycling and reduction
  • Tracking of biodiversity initiatives such as Wild Meadows
  • Oversight of stakeholder communication and engagement

The results

By implementing a Thinkproject solution, Via Salis achieved significant improvements across project delivery, operations and sustainability management:

Improved efficiency and process control: Having a common data environment has streamlined workflows and reduced complexity, enabling more efficient coordination across all project phases.

Enhanced transparency and data quality: By creating a centralised single source of truth, Thinkproject provides a transparent and controlled environment that supports traceability, governance and secure management of project information. Advanced search and reporting capabilities further enable teams to quickly access relevant information and generate insights for informed decision-making.

Stronger sustainability management: Thinkproject has supported Via Salis in monitoring and managing information related to key ESG metrics, including: Carbon emissions across all scopes

  • Waste reduction and recycling performance
  • Biodiversity initiatives

Choosing the right digital solution can support more efficient, transparent and sustainable infrastructure delivery. With the right digital foundation in place, organisations are better equipped to both meet growing ESG demands and optimise performance across the project lifecycle.
