Supporting upgrades to busy S6 rail route
Modernising central rail infrastructure with Document & Communication Management
Project
The modernisation works between Frankfurt West and Friedberg is one of the main rail infrastructure projects of the Rhein-Main-Bahn. The 16 km line was operating at its full capacity and congested due to scheduled standstill times to allow faster trains to pass.
By upgrading to barrier-free access and a new station, faster and more reliable service can be achieved. Furthermore, track expansion was also brought into the project to allow S-Bahn traffic to pass through easily without causing disruption.
Construction takes place in two stages. Phase one focuses on extending the Frankfurt West-Bad Vilbel line from two to four tracks, with five stations along a 13 km route upgraded. Phase two will extend the Bad-Vilbel-Friedberg line from four to six, with more station upgrades.

Challenge
Extension of rail lines is a complex task that must be completed with minimum disruption to traffic that is using the existing routes. This means work must be carefully coordinated and completed with minimum delays. Safety is also paramount, both for traffic and for the teams carrying out the works.
Solution
Thinkproject’s Document & Communication Management solution keeps all project participants working from a single source of truth. Drawing management was particularly beneficial for this project, with individually configured workflows providing greater transparency and allowing project managers to anticipate any issues in good time.
Result
Within Thinkproject, document management databases were implemented, alongside RFI workflows. As more external participants joined the project, they were comfortably integrated into a structured process, avoiding error and duplicate work.
